Can a capsule wardrobe really work?

Crisp white tops. Denim jeans. Black pumps. These are just a few of the items most fashion minimalists have on their wardrobe essentials list. But is a capsule wardrobe full of next-level basics really all you need to create an amazing outfit for any occasion?

I've been wearing a particular white ribbed singlet for years. I wear it under button-up tops, on their own with denim shorts or jeans and even to bed with my pajama pants - it goes with just about anything! At least until I have to hit Dance Cardio class and will need to wear a supportive bra that can't be covered by a racer-back singlet. The breathable cotton singlet would be okay to workout in around the house, but I have to trade it for activewear that is essential for my lifestyle, whether it's a classic or not.

With a capsule wardrobe, there always seems to be the assumption that every wardrobe needs a pair of classic black pumps to go from office to happy hour. Well, I can appreciate heels as much as the next girl, but my wide feet can barely stand narrow pumps for a few hours, let alone an entire day. Therefore, my open-toe beige heels are the classic shoe I wear to death. But not at the office, because well, I don't work in an office.

Basically, I have a capsule wardrobe that works for me. It's full of classics like jeans and singlets in my favorite neutral tones (I'll leave blacks and greys to the big city girls!), and a pair of Vans in my favourite colour are essential. I mean, let's face it, I can't ride a skate board in classic Ballet flats!

So if your keen to minimize your wardrobe to the essentials and be practical, remember to keep in mind what you'll need for your lifestyle. If any of the clothes that most stylists say you need can't be styled for any of your occasions, chances are you don't need it!
